Brand Feature: prAna | The One Without Plastic Packaging
It is always an exciting day when a new shipment arrives at River & Trail Outdoor Co. Even more exciting is when that new shipment arrives without plastic! One brand that excels at this is prAna.
They have been creative with their packaging since the beginning. When prAna launched in 1992, in California; founders Beaver and Pam Theodasakis re-used cardboard grocery boxes for shipping and handmade tags from recycled paper. Today, much of their clothing arrives rolled and secured with a piece of recyclable raffia. We then re-use those raffia ties for a variety of things such as hanging decor, re-attaching price tags, gift wrapping and more.
When more packaging is required, they utilize an FSC-certified paper bag. Recycled paper is still used for their tags and they skip out on any plastic by attaching them with cotton string or thread.
prAna is a front runner for sustainable and ethical practices within the apparel industry. They continue to push their own production and are also challenging other brands with their Responsible Packaging Movement. Several other brands we carry at River & Trail have joined the movement including: Smartwool, Hoka, Hillsound, Merrell, TenTree, Salomon and Outdoor Research. The Responsible Packaging Movement is an effort which is working towards reducing excess packaging waste, as well as eliminating "use of materials from ancient and endangered forests by 2022, and virgin forest fibers by 2025."
